Important People
Jean Baptiste Colbert
Colbert was put in charge of planning by the King. He wanted the French colony to be a part of the mercantile system. Jean said that the colonists should receive goods made in France and them in return, the colonists would send back fish, timber and/or furs. Colbert suggested that there should be no trading posts in the interior of North America. He said this because he wanted to avoid conflict with the First Nations. Although he had great and effective ideas, no one listened. Instead, they relied on the extensive economic network of the Wendat.
Jean Talon
Jean was in charge of the economy after 1665. He used money from the government to attract colonists. He also supported local industries. It was because of Jean Talon that the number of French in New France increased.
